Xinhua News Agency Washington, Jan.10(Reporter Liu Chen) The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against eight senior Iranian officials and mining companies, among others, in response to previous Iranian missile attacks on U.S.-based Iraqi military bases, further reducing Iranian funding sources.

The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement that the eight high-ranking Iranian officials who were sanctioned included Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, and Mohamed Reza Ashtyani, deputy chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces. The sanctions also involved 17 Iranian metal producers and mining companies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said at a White House press conference that sanctions on senior officials for alleged involvement in previous Iranian missile attacks on military bases in Iraq with U.S. troops would significantly reduce the Iranian government’s sources of funding.
